We are a Digital Marketing Consultancy, we offer SEO services, in fact, SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is at the heart of everything we do- when we design, develop, write content, launch and manage a website for our clients, including preparing content and landing pages for any advertising, like GoogleAds. And yet we still get those spam SEO emails.
Our clients get spam SEO email too. Everyone knows what SPAM is and yes it’s annoying, and yes we are all pretty sick of it, and yes we generally ignore it or hopefully it lands straight in the junk folder. And sometimes we fall foul of the occasional scam spam email, it’s true! Even the most security aware and advanced users get caught out sometimes. So it’s understandable that some spam SEO emails can be a worry for business clients that have paid an agency, web professional or consultant not to have to worry about all this ‘tech web stuff’.
It’s frustrating for the client, and just an annoyance for us who work in the sector, filling up our inboxes. When our clients get Spam emails about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), all is does is make them worry. Often the spam email received is a list of jargon, the content of which is sort of recognisable to the client, as they may have heard some of the terms before or they can google search it and the SEO spam has instilled a nagging doubt that ‘something is wrong’, something to worry about, something to query, “maybe I should click on that link?”.
Here is a typical example of a spam SEO email received by a UK client through one of their ‘call to actions’ on their website :
Hello,

Lets take minute or two to analyse the spam SEO email… 1, 2, 3…
1. It’s Friendly
First off it’s friendly “Hello , How are you, hope you are fine” , it sucks you in to reading it. Did you notice it wasn’t addressed directly to you, using your name? It sounds like they care about you and your business success. And well the recipient was fine initially -until they read the rest of it! Now they are worried.
2. Check out the Grammar and Spelling
Secondly, the language, vocabulary and the grammar reads like a bad translation. Also in the UK we spell OPTIMISATION with an “S” not a “Z” as in OPTIMIZATION, that’s for our friends over the pond.
3. The List of Jargon
Thirdly, yes, its all good stuff and yes the digital team did all this and more! Except maybe number 8 ” 8. The Products are not following Structured markup data” as this client doesn’t sell ‘products’, which they would know if they had actually looked at the website. And yes all the information on the website has been structured in such a way that the search engines can crawl, index, and display the information correctly, its standard stuff- So yes the SEO spam is a lie from start to finish.
More Red Flags To Look Out For in the Spam SEO Email
- Not an actual phone number! Often if the spam SEO email received is a Web form enquiry from your website to your email, the contact phone number filled in is just a row of random numbers.
- Not a real business email address. Often you will see a free webmail account being used to send out the 100% automated spam SEO emails using a hotmail or gmail account.
WHY do people send these spam SEO emails?
- Trying to get your password details. They have no intention of ever doing SEO for you.
- Doing really poor SEO, that will break your website.
- To pass the enquiry on to an actual company, which they are not, they are just spamming for possible business.
Finally but by no means least, don’t let these types of SEO spam emails, make you doubt yourself, make you worry or doubt the real deal digital professionals you hire to help you- because we get them too!
